Spirit Airlines coming to Louisville this spring with nonstop flights to 4 major cities

Good morning, everybody. Thanks for coming out. We do appreciate it. It’s, uh it’s nice to have some good news after. Ah, long, tough 2020. Um, I wanna welcome all the guests to your first. A Mayor Fisher, who you will hear from here in a few minutes. We also have Dale Boden, who is the chair of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. Other board members present. I got Cleo in the back. Pat McDonald. Hey, thanks for coming out for this. Uh, I know we’ve all been talking about it for a couple years now, so thanks for coming. Ah. Few folks that I really, really wanna mention and give some big things. Thio. Sandra Fraser. She’s the chair of impetus. Sandra has, uh, has really been a force on improving the airport and, frankly, the community, but has been a great resource for me. You’ll hear from Sandra here in a little bit too. But Sandra really has taken here service development on and has been wonderful to work with. Sarah David Sherwin, Wisdom President, CEO of July Uh, Sarah and I have have worked on air service and and frankly, working with the business community to support everything we do at the airport and everything the airport does to support business. So, Sarah, thanks for being here as well. And Karen Williams. Karen, I’ve told Karen this before with the Louisville Tourism. I’ve been in a few airports. Um, this tourism department is simply the best I’ve ever had a chance to work with. And so, Karen, thanks for being here today as well. Mm. All right. So let’s get started with this. Um, again, Thanks for coming. Um, about a year ago, this time we were It’s hard to believe about a year ago, we were celebrating the best year in the history of the airport. The best year in terms of cargo activity. The best year in terms off passenger activity. Things were really looking great in February, January, February, the best coming off the best year ever. And then we started hearing about ah, virus and flu like symptoms. And by April, we were down 96% not just us, but nationwide. And this pandemic was something that was like, Oh, my gosh, this is this is really, really a serious deal, but we still didn’t really know much about it. We knew it impacted air travel. Frankly, every aspect of our daily lives had been impacted. And I know we were Many of us were talking about man, This really could last until Memorial Day. I’ve told us before we were thinking Memorial Day of 2020. We had no idea that we’d still be facing this year later. But I will say through it all, we you know, we started learning more about the cove in 19. We responded very quickly to make sure that people that traveled those that still needed travel or want to travel they could do it safely through our airport. And I really thought through this adversity, um, there will be opportunity. And I know that sounds cliche, but I was very upbeat about what we had to offer here in Louisville and what we would do coming out of this pandemic in 2021 2022 all the things that made our city great still existed. Bourbon is, um, the travel tourism are great partners. All that was still here, even though we were in the middle of pandemic. Um, the other part is our record cargo partner ups and world port gives us an advantage that really no other airport in the country has it, uh, their activity keeps are cost competitive and allows us to make a case for new air service. Um and so our partners at World Port have been extremely helpful. And I knew when recovery came or, um, when we start talking new airlines that we would have an advantage and then the secret weapon. Um, I talk about my secret weapon all the time. It’s Anthony Gilmer. He is is simply the best air service director in the business. And, uh, all these things were made possible by his relentless pursuit of new opportunities the data, his network of friends, and so that’s our secret weapon. So I said, with all these things, we’re bound and determined to come out of this better and stronger than we were before. And so today we’re here to announce a new airline to serve our market. That new airline is Spirit airlines. Spirit Airlines has great aircraft, great airfares, uh, vast network across the country, Central and South America, the Caribbean. If you want to get there, you could do it. You can do it more often. you can. Another airlines. And so we’re so pleased to be announcing this new air service on a new airline to our great city spirit Airlines and Thio. Thanks. This is this is probably the best air service announcement I’ve made in my career. And I’ve been around a minute or two. So I love love and the fact that we get to do this. We have a little welcome video I’d like you to see before I call up. Uh, the spirit Reps. Paul Rodgers, voice of the Cardinals here with the moment you’ve all been waiting for, whether your cards fan or not, it’s an exciting day for all of us. In Louisville, the Mohammed Ali International Airport is proud to welcome Spirit Airlines. Beginning May 27th, Spirit will offer daily nonstop flights from Louisville toe four destinations Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Onboard their bright Devil planes will now enjoy low fares, signature service and best in class on time performance. Louisville, we’ve got spirit. It is gonna be so great. CNet aircraft on the ramp and taking off and flying out of here. We got a bright sunshiny day. No snow like we had last week, and so everything is is good. So with that, I would like to invite Mike Byron, vice president of airport services from Spirit Airlines up and tell us more about Spirit Airlines. It’s that stupid. Hi there, folks. Uh, again, thank you so much for being here. This is just ah, fantastic day for us to be out in the real world interacting with real people. That just fantastic. So So thank you so much. And a Z you heard in the video and something we love to say. Something that I’m really proud to say is Louisville finally has spirit, right? And and we’re here. So as we as we saw in the video starting on on May 27th, you’re going to see these big yellow birds flying into and out of, uh, you know, Louisville Mohammed Ali International Airport. And as we talked about the destinations, I think it’s really, really important to note that Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Las Vegas, there three of our largest airports. And so the ability for folks here in Louisville to connect to other parts of our network eyes is tremendous through those through those stations. So I think that’s something that can’t be understated. The other thing that I really want to drive home is Fort Lauderdale. We have multiple flights to international destinations, and the service that we’re gonna be providing on a daily basis will allow people to take advantage of those, uh, those those flights and those those destinations in the Latin America and the Caribbean. And, uh and we think we have something great Thio offer the folks here in Louisville. We, you know, Dan talked about, you know, a year ago and so the world we were in versus versus today I mean, we have wanted Thio be in Louisville for some time on to deliver what we call more go. And And as part of more go, uh, it really is about offering more convenience and low airfares. That’s what gets people traveling. Ondas Well is doing it through our spirits signature service and some of the industry’s best on time performing flight. So we bring all of that right away thio to the market, and we’re excited about that. The other thing that the folks will get to take advantage of right away is something we’ve been doing for a number of years, which we refer to as invest in the guest. And this is an ongoing initiative that we have been, uh, really on on a on a pursuit of and will continue to do, uh, now and into the future. But just to give you just a few sort of sort of sort of nuggets or incites a So what that looks like for the folks of Louisville. Um, first of all, you know, we have one of the youngest fleets, uh, in the country, which is something I don’t know. A lot of people know, and so it’s important that we put that out there. The second part is we’re actually retrofitting the entire fleet of cabin interiors, and we’re actually putting in new seats that are more spacious and more comfortable. I think that’s something that people will really appreciate. We know that because when we survey, I guess they’re very, very pleased with what we what we put into the aircraft as it pertains to the airport experience we’ve been We’ve been a leader in this in this space, and we’ve been innovating and implementing new technology, self backdrop technology and biometric photo matching technology. that is really all about expediting the guest journey through the airport so that they can ultimately get to their final destination. We’re doing that in a lot of our high frequency airports. And last but not least, to sort of the tip of the iceberg is we just relaunched on all new free spirit loyalty program, which is which has been just a tremendous success for us very, very early on and for the folks that are looking to travel on us. I encourage you to sign up early s so you can take advantage of of some of those free perks. So So that just gives you a little bit of color in a little bit of context is to what the community at large. We’ll get to experience when you’re interacting with us. Uh, just to sort of sort of come to a close to the comments that I wanna make. I want to thank all the folks, uh, spirit, that sort of help bring this, uh, this event to to reality. And and I’m gonna bring this this service to this community on I also want to thank the folks. I think we call out Anthony And there’s a few other folks here at the Louisville Mohammed Ali International Airport that have just been, like, incredibly welcoming. Um, you know, we we get to work with a lot of airports across the country, and I can tell you, uh, we feel the love and we’re looking forward Thio building this partnership for years and years to come. So with that, I will close and just say Louisville has spirit. Okay, Don’t get your spirit. Thank you, Mike. Um, good morning, everyone. My name is Dale Boating, and I have the honor of serving as the board chair of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. And I’m glad you all are here to join us. Today s Oh, it’s my pleasure to introduce the Louisville Mayor, Mayor Greg Fischer. Well, thank you, Dale. And it’s wonderful for our great city to have spirit. That’s, uh, this is one of four major economic development announcements made in the last 24 hours here in our city. Eso we really welcome spirit and the entire team and what you all represent in terms of your entrepreneurial attitude and success. And it’s great to see the mo mentum coming to Louisville We’re not out of the pandemic now. There’s no question about that. But there’s all kinds of good signs with the vaccines in cases dropping and it’s upended our worlds like we haven’t seen before. But all throughout that is, Dan said. If you keep showing up and you keep working hard every day, opportunities present themselves, and then when you have a good team behind them, you can take advantage of that. So I really want to thank Dan. The whole team here at the Airport Authority are bored. Rebecca Fly shakers here from Louisville. Forward our economic development opportunity and thank Mike Barman all the new partners spirit for making this happen here today. You know, people are want to get out more than ever in the last year, and it’s interesting to see some of the research being done during this during this phase of the pandemic. People just say what’s more important to them than anything else is just being around other people and just kind of feeling what it’s like to have those relationships again. So whether that’s in home in our great city, or whether it’s one of these new, wonderful destiny destinations that spirit is offering. It just is really symbolic. I think of what we see hopefully happening all across America. And certainly I know in our city as well as we recover from this pandemic, there are a lot of people that are eager to travel all during this time. When you look around the airport, this airport look very differently several years ago, Then when it does right now. So all of the planning that went into upgrading this, uh, it’s this wonderful asset is ready to take off with the expansion of spirit and air traffic coming back to the city. And that’s one of the reasons why I’m so optimistic when you go back to last February and March. And when you think about the role that we were on a za city in terms of tourism in terms of our economy, it’s all here ready to go and plus several other assets. Cleo have been added since then, so we’re in really good shape for the recovery. Whether it’s our physical assets or new partners like this is well, so we couldn’t be more happy to say Welcome to spirit. Thank you for investing in our city we will exceed your expectations and look forward to many more opportunities to come as well. Thanks, everybody. Congratulations. It’s a great day in the city. Thank you, Mayor. Uh, now I’d like to introduce Sandra Fraser and Eyes Dan indicated earlier. Sandra, her real job is CEO of tandem, uh, public relations. But as chair of impetus, uh, she’s been focused on not only air service, but a lot of things that that organization could do to impact our city and make changes for the better. Sandra. Thank you, Dale. And because I work in PR, it’s a little bit odd to be on this side rather on the other side, which is where I am much more comfortable. Um, as Dales said, I’m Sandra Fraser, the chair of Impetus, and on behalf of our group, I’m honored to be here today to be part of this exciting news, and I believe, and I think I can speak for all of them, but it’s that this is going to have such a huge impact on our community in our region because this is truly amazing news, and it’s huge for Louisville. And so I just want everybody here to understand what a game changer this is for those of you who aren’t familiar with impetus, where a group of over 60 business, social service, education and faith leaders brought together in 2017 by the late David Jones senior with the shared goal of taking action for a better Louisville. And we are committed to furthering the community’s best interest. And that includes expanding service here in the airport commercial air service so that we can build business in the community. This is one of our priority focus areas and something that we have been vocal about over the years, even before impetus was formed by Mr Jones because the business community believes that when air services expanded, we know that the community winds and today this is a win for all of us. Spirit Airlines will be taking travelers to four Marquis cities with direct flights as mentioned. This includes Fort Lauderdale, Florida Orlando, Florida Las Vegas, Nevada in Los Angeles, California And that’s huge news, and I’m gonna say it again. It’s Los Angeles nonstop flights to L. A X, and this is huge. Thank you. Uh, that’s what it told me to pause for clapping. So I was trying to get somebody to clap back there. So at any rate, this route is important for so many in the business community to reach the West Coast. Plus, it allows people to easily reach Louisville, And I think for those of us who like to take these long extended holiday weekends, this is a great opportunity that we can easily leave here in the morning, get to L. A and come back on a Sunday. And it’s terrific. And in order for Louisville in the surrounding region to become a top vacation spot in the United States for people across the country and a top tourist destination, we have to be able to offer travelers the flights to get here. Impetus has a vision that by 2030 Louisville will be named one of the most popular vacation spots, not on the coastal United States and with our world famous distilleries, local horse racing, Southern cuisine and hospitality, and now the addition of a new airline. We know that our vision will in fact, one day be a reality. So thank you to Mike and to Dan and Darryl into Anthony and to everyone at the Louisville regional airport authority for trying to bring this and finally getting us some great air service. Dan, we love your pyramid model. And so it’s terrific. And so, with that in mind, welcome to Louisville. And I’m gonna welcome Dale Baden backup Dale. Thank you, Sandra. You know this This is an exciting day on a lot of different levels. And I think a couple of, um, realities for us is that in the middle of this, you know, worldwide pandemic Standiford field has continued to move forward. So in the past year, we’ve been recognized as, um, the fourth busiest cargo airport in the world and the second busiest cargo airport in the U. S. So on the top of that sort of accolade, we get to announce Spirit airlines joining us, which is, you know, a terrific monument, monumental milestone for the community. So, you know, it’s a testament to Dan and his team and his secret weapon Anthony over there. But we have 34 nonstop flights in destinations, um, out of SDF these days, Um, s o for, uh, that type of information and bringing spirit into the equation, um, with their adding therefore daily nonstop flights. It’s, uh it’s harkens to their their mission of more go and more go cuts both ways. Not only do we go from Louisville, but people get to go to Louisville. Eso We’re very excited about adding spirit to the thing. Thank you all for attending. Kentucky is known as the Land of the Spirits were thrilled to bring a new kind of spirit into Kentucky today. So welcome to the bluegrass State Spirit Airlines. Thank you. I think now we’re supposed to get everybody up here with mass on for a photo. Is that right, Caroline? Yep. Before we do that, I’d like to ask Dan to come up and Mike, we experience. Got a little gift for you, Dan.
Good morning, everybody. Thanks for coming out. We do appreciate it. It’s, uh it’s nice to have some good news after. Ah, long, tough 2020. Um, I wanna welcome all the guests to your first.
